Week 5 Blog Task - Australian Identity

Go to this link to interact with a slideshow of images and text to explore the emergence of a distinctly Australian identity in place of a British identity. Investigate the changes that resulted in a shift to a national vision. Identify the various events in colonial history that brought about this growing national vision and the issues which the colonists saw as particularly relevant to their circumstances. Examine how changes in circumstances affected the colonists' view of the world and their place in it. Complete the related task. Use the student log in code LJSYGO. You will need to use a laptop or desktop computer to complete this task as the slideshow requires Flash.

Australia became a nation in 1901. Their ideal was One People, One Destiny. This is about how they got there.

In 1644, Dutch explorer Abel Tasman first sailed to Australia. He named it New Holland. Over 100 years later, British settlers made a colony on the east coast of Australia, naming the entire coast New South Wales. When WA was settled, The name Australia was used for the whole of the continent. Western Australia was one colony, Van Diemen's Land (Tassie) was another and the whole rest of the mainland was New South Wales.

Victoria was named after Queen Victoria (reigned 1837-1901). In the early 1800s colonists still thought they were British, because Australia was a realm of the British Empire.

By the early 1900s, Britain's Empire/Commonwealth covered roughly a quarter of the Earth. However, AUS and NZ were the furthest away from Britain, leaving them vulnerable to attack and isolated.

Queensland took over part of PNG in 1883 to stop Germany. Britain rejected this. However the colonies persuaded Britain to properly make PNG part of the British Empire in 1884.

In the 1850s the gold rush came to Australia, and many perceived a threat from China. Because of this, most of the colonies restricted the amount of Chinese immigration.

However, by 1901, when AUS became independent, one-fifth of Aussie settlers were born overseas. However, many of these felt that Australia truly was their home and many expressed that in song and symbols.

By the late 1800s Australia had established telegraph systems linking the colonies and railways horrendously cut travel times between cities.

When Australia began to participate in Britain's wars, such as the Bore War (1899-1902) and the Great War (1914-18). Australia was well on the way to establishing her national identity that we all know today.

By early 20th century, British colonies covered almost 25% of the world. However, Australian felt very isolated and vulnerable to attack form a foreign power.

In 1883, Queensland took over part of New Guinea to stop Germany from taking it over. Britain did not approve, but agreed after the colonies voiced their concerns. New Guinea became a colony of Britain in 1884.

The large number of Chinese immigrants during the gold rush in the 1850's made white colonists concerned there would be an "invasion" from the north.

By late 1890's unity as a nation also developed as more of the population was born in Australia rather than overseas.

Media also influenced the mood of the new nation and encouraged an independent Australia, but a White Australia.

Improved communications and transport in the late 1880's also helped to bring the colonists together.

Australia celebrated it's ideal of 'One people, one destiny' and it's new Federation on January 1 1901.

In 1644, the Dutch seafarer Abel Tasman first sailed sailed to the continent of Australia and he called it New Holland.
144 years later, British settlers colonised on the eastern part of this land and named it New South Wales.
Western Australia was settled in 1829 by Europeans. At that time, the term 'Australia' (meaning 'southern land' in Latin)was used to refer to the whole continent. Even thought the land was named Australia, the people who lived there didn't think themselves Australians.

the people living in Australia still considered themselves British in the early 1800s.
Many places in Australia, such as Victoria, were named after the monarch of the colonies at the time, Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1837 to 1901. Australia was like other parts of the British empire.

25 percent of the world were British territories by the early 1900s. Several of these territoriez were far away from Britain, but Australia and New Zealand were the furthest away.
The colonists felt isolated and vulnerable to attack by another power, but being so far away they still called Britain home.

At this time in history many of the stronger nations were trying to become the most powerful on earth. The colonists felt threatened by this and it brought them closer together.

Chinese immigrants began coming to Australia because of the gold rushes in the 1850s. By the 1880s, the white colonists started feeling that Chinese immigrants were taking over. Because of this, most colonies made legislation to restrict Chinese immigration.

The people of Australia decided that uniting together was a great idea, by a concern for defence and a sense of common culture.
By the late 1890s, most colonists were born in Australia rather than overseas. They felt Australia was their home and began to sing songs and make symbols to express their loyalty to Australia.

In the late 1800s, most people were under 30 years old. Newspapers saw an opportunity to build a society independently from the British empire. The newspaper sought an Australia that would be more democratic and fairer to workers - only if it would be a White Australia. Communications and transport were also improved, allowing people to hear news about other colonies.

In 1899, war broke out in a part of the British Empire. Soldiers from 6 Australian colonies went to war in South Africa alongside Britain. Australian soldiers fought for the empire, but they dressed and spoke differently. They saw themselves as Australians, not British people.
